One of every four Californians with health insurance are covered by the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. Although promoted as a not for profit health system, that label is only accurate for the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Inc. The Health Plan collects money from subscribers and pays the hospitals and the physicians. The hospitals are also not for profit, but after all hospital and physician bills are paid, the profit is then paid to the doctors who are part of the Permanente Medical Group. In Southern California, the Southern California Permanente Medical Group is a corporation, with all doctors as shareholders.
Although Kaiser has patient/subscribers throughout California, and Kaiser opens new hospitals and physician clinics every year, it does not offer complete services in all areas of California.
